Fifth Grade News

J0401562

My how fast this year has gone by! I’m sure it seems like just yesterday you were putting your cute little kindergartener on the bus for their first day of school. Now that cute kindergartner has turned into a big fifth grader, anxious and ready to go to middle school!

The CRCT has come and gone! You should all be very proud of how well your students applied their testing strategies and all that they learned throughout the year. They were focused and ready to soar!

The last few weeks of school hold many exciting things for fifth graders to look forward to… here are just a few of the important dates of upcoming events:

  • Tuesday, May 20thFifth Grade End of the Year Celebration – This will include various activities to enjoy – jumping machines, games, prizes, cook out and much more!
  • Wednesday/Thursday May 21-22nd Honors Day – Parents of students receiving an award will receive and invitation to this special day.
  • Friday, May 23rd – Last day of School! – Walk of Honor- Fifth grade will take their last walk through the hallways as students of Big Shanty Intermediate.

That just about wraps up the school year! Keep informed of what’s happening in your child’s classroom by visiting our blog and be sure to check Thursday folders for last minute reminders!

By now you must be asking yourselves, what can I do to keep my child entertained during the summer? Here are a few ideas from the 5th grade teachers…

1.      Get a combination lock and practice opening it

2.      Get a library card and check out some good books.

3.      Practice those math facts!

4.      Keep a diary of all the things you do over the summer

5.      Start a new hobby.

6.      Go to a camp.

7.      Hang out by the pool or at the beach – but take a book too!

8.      Relax, middle school will be here before you know it!

Relay for Life

The Big Shanty Relay for Life team has the goal to collect $1 from each person who spends their day at Big Shanty.  In turn the students will take part in a Mock Relay honoring our collaborative fight against cancer on Friday, May 2.  If we reach 100% participation for a total of $885 the students will have a special surprise that day!

We will be dedicating our walk to our P.E. teacher, Mrs. Bridget Hammond.  We will also recognize two of our Big Shanty student who have won the battle against cancer and remember two or our former employees who lost the battle.  Relay for Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer like our Mrs. Hammond and others will be supported so that one day cancer will be eliminated.

Thank you for supporting your Big Shanty Relay for LIfe team in the fight against cancer.

Big Shanty Carnival - Friday, April 18

Dear Families,

I hope you all enjoyed a relaxing spring break.  I know we did.  Just writing a note to remind you of the upcoming Spring Carnival sponsored by the Kennesaw Elem. PTSA and Big Shanty PTSA.  The Carnival will take place this Friday, April 18 from 5:30-8:30 at Big Shanty Elementary School.  This event should provide a lot of fun for the whole family.

To make this event successful, PTSA has asked that each class donate 6 cakes for the cake walk and one 2-liter of named brand soda from each 5th grade student.  The cakes should not need to be refrigerated.  We currently have 3 2-liters of soda that have been brought to school and 3 families providing a cake.  If anyone else is able to donate, please let me know ASAP via note or email (lisa.woodruff@cobbk12.org)  The scheduled drop off time for the cakes and soda is during morning car line on Friday, April 18.  If you cannot do this time, you can drop it off anytime in the front office on Thursday, April 17.

Thank you all as well for providing items for the Candy theme basket that will go up for auction on Friday.  It is full of sweets donated by three of our classroom families.  Be sure to check it out as well as all the other baskets.

Take care all.  Thank you again for all your support and hope to see you at the Carnival.
