v     Our 4^th grade musical is going to be Tuesday, December 8^th. Please make sure that your permission slip is returned. Without it, you can’t be in the musical! Students should arrive at 6:00pm. The performance begins at 6:30.

 

v     Our first field trip is tomorrow! Please wear your 4^th grade teal t-shirt.

 

 

v     If you would like to go with us next Tuesday, December 8^th on our second field trip to the

, please send in a note with your child.

v     Please remind your child to wear pants on Tuesday because they will be climbing and crawling-no skirts or dresses please!

v   I send home failing test grades to be corrected. Please review these tests with your students and sign that you have seen the test. I only allow one night to make up these tests. It is very important that the tests come back corrected the next day.

November book reports will be due the Monday we return from break. Please help your child and make sure they fill out the yellow sheet correctly. There will be no book report for December.

Class News

 

v     We are running out of time to turn in our Sunny DÒ labels. If you or anyone in your family drinks Sunny DÒ please save the UPC labels! If we send in 20 UPC labels, we will get 20 free books for the classroom. So, please start sending them in! This will be a great way to get some good literature for our classroom! I need these turned in to me by Tuesday, November 10^th.

 

v     Tonight, Thursday November 5^th is Math 911 night. Come and find out what the 4^th grade math curriculum is all about.

 

v Class T-shirts have arrived! Every student that ordered a shirt has already gotten them. Please let me know if your child ordered a t-shirt, but did not bring one home.

 

v There will be no Thanksgiving Feast in the cafeteria like we have done before. Parents are welcome to come eat with their children any day of the week. However, due to increased enrollment this year, our lunch manager has decided it best to not do things the way we have done them in the past. On November 11^th, the traditional Thanksgiving food will be on the menu for the children to choose if they would like to.

 

v      I am asking that each student try to bring in at least ONE can for our canned food drive. If this is not possible for you and your family, please let me know. For every 10 cans a student brings in, they get a free homework pass from me.  The class that brings in the most cans wins a pizza party! We have a good pile going already!

 

v      Y-ties are coming for only $4.00. Why tie when you can Y-tie?!?!?!

Each student received materials for the October book report. If you have finished your book, be working on your bags. You may turn them in early. We will begin presenting on Friday, October 30^th. However, there is an extension due date all the way up until November 13^th.

 

Math Hint for the Week:

Please continue to practice your multiplication facts as often as you can. If you don’t know your multiplication facts, division is much harder than it has to be! J

v                 In Thursday Folders this week, you will see that students have brought home our first book orders. Students are in no way required to place an order. This is just for fun in case they would like a book to read at home. Fill out the back and send in the money to school. These orders will be due October 15^th.  I am excited to announce that you can now also place your book order online. It is very easy.

·        First, go to http://scholastic.com/clubs/

·        Sign in on the right using our class’ username. It  is Vaughan4 and our password is read.

v               From here, you may shop around. You will purchase the books on the Scholastic website with a credit card instead of sending the money to the school with your child. All of the books will still be shipped to the school in one order. Please let me know if you have any questions!

v     In Thursday Folders this week are vouchers for a Thrashers game. If you don’t see one, it is because your child said they didn’t want one. To redeem your voucher and turn them into tickets for a free hockey game, follow the directions on the voucher. Please email me if you have any questions.

v     Math Night is coming up! It will be Tuesday, October 6^th. Please come!!! It is a super fun night packed with all kinds of hands-on games for kids. Each student that comes will receive a homework pass. Come and check it out!

v     Our school will be hosting a Book Fair next week. Students will be able to walk around and purchase books and other items. If you would like your student to purchase items, please have a talk with them about handling money responsibly in the classroom. Money often goes up “missing” and I would hate for your student to miss out on an opportunity to purchase some good reading material. J

Each student did a wonderful job on their book report for the month of September. For the month of October, each student needs to pick a mystery book (please note all “thriller/scary” books are not mysteries.) The materials will be sent home soon.

Spelling Homework

Each student should have a teal cardstock piece of paper in their homework folder that shows exactly what they are expected to do each night for spelling homework. However, several students have lost theirs already and so I thought in the intrest of making extra copies that I would post it here. :)

Spelling Directions

Please do each activity on the day assigned in order to build skills. *

 

Monday	Writing Sort • find a quiet place and flat surface to work on • dump your words out of your baggie – DO NOT LOSE THEM! • put your headers at the top of your columns • push and say each word out loud as you place it under the correct header • do this for all of your words and you will have a completed sort • read all your words to an adult *­ * You will do this EVERY night! *­ * • draw columns on a piece of paper and copy your words into their correct column • write your headers at the top of the columns and then write all the words in the correct columns • this is a WRITING SORT • when you are done, put your words back into your baggie, put them back in your homework folder, and return them to school
Tuesday	Speed Sort and Sentences • sort your words and read to an adult • mix up the words and sort three times as fast as you can • write five sentences on a half sheet of paper using any five of your words (each sentence should start with a different word and have at least six words) • when you are done, put your words into your baggie, put them back in your homework folder, and return to school
Wednesday	Alphabetical Order • sort your words and read to an adult • leave the sorted words under the correct header, and write them in alphabetical order according to their sorts. Example:            -at           aCe                             at            face                            bat           place                            cat           race • when you are done, put your words into your baggie, put them back in your homework folder, and return to school
Thursday	No Peek Sort • sort your words and read to an adult • draw your word sort columns and headers on a piece of paper • put the words back into your baggie and give it to an adult • have an adult call out the words and write them in the correct columns • this is a NO PEEK SORT (like a practice spelling test) • have an adult check your “no peek” word sort • write the words you missed 3 times each on the back • when you are done, put your words into your baggie, put them back in your homework folder, and return to school

Hint for the Week:

 

Students should already be reading the book they would like to do a book report on. As you read, take some good notes on things you might want to include in your book report.  For example, who are the main characters in the book? Why do you consider them the main characters?

Practice the math facts as much as possible. I cannot stress enough the importance of knowing the basic math facts. Quick recall of these facts is essential for success in 4^th grade.

v     Thank you to all of you who came to Open House! It was great to see everyone again. J

v     Today in Thursday Folders, you will find a t-shirt form. It is not required to have a t-shirt, but convenient for spirit day Fridays, field trips, and field day at the end of the year. Please fill it out and return it as soon as possible so we can order them.

 

v     The Big Shanty Fundraiser is underway. I hope everyone will participate. It is a great way to support our PTA and our school. The last day is September 10^th.

 

v     Our first of several Performing Arts performances will be held on October 21^st. Your child must return the permission slip in order to be able to participate in these wonderful events. Please note: The forms were in Thursday Folders last week. Please let me know if you need another one.

Everyone should have a good chapter book on their reading level for the book report due at the end of the month. Pace yourself so that you don’t get to the end of the month and have too much to read!
