February is Flying By!

First, I would like to give a big "Thanks" to all who attended conferences.  I really enjoyed meeting with all of you and hope you found the information we shared helpful to make the rest of our year a great one!

We continue to work very hard to cover all skills needed to be successful on the upcoming Writing Assessment and CRCT.  We will focus and review all writing strategies this week in preparation for the Writing Assessment on March 4th. Please mark your calendar as it is also an Early Release Day.

Though the CRCT is not until the end of April, I hope that you have encouraged your child to try the Study Island Practice Tests at home.  If you are having any difficulty accessing the website, please contact me via e-mail or note and I will assist you in any way possible.

Thanks for your continued support!

New Year News!

Congratulations to Luqman Elrifadi and Austin Ingram for representing our class well in the Geograhy Bee and Spelling Bee.  Both were second runners-up in each competition:  Luqman in the Geography Bee and Austin in the Spelling Bee.  Again a job well done!

The third nine weeks is in full swing and we will be focusing on writing skills in preparation for the Writing Assessment in March. Also in continuing preparation for the the CRCT, we have purchased a web-based program called Study Island designed to help your child in areas of need.  There is no software to download or install, all you need is an Internet connection.

IMPORTANT:  The last week of January,26th - 30th, is Parent Conference Week and Book Fair.  Students will be dismissed approximately two hours earlier each day.  Make certain you have made necessary accommodations and that you have written down the correct day and time for your conference.  Remember, promptness is important for the schedule to run smoothly for all.

FIELD TRIP INFO:  The trip to the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL is planned for Friday, March 27th.  Please send in permission forms and payments by FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20th.  Please let me know if your child is not going on the field trip. This information is important for planning purposes. Reminder:  The cost is $75.00.

See you Conference Week!

November 16, 2008

In addition to our Thanksgiving Feast, which is Wednesday not Thursday, we are also wrapping up our novel study on Shiloh.  I have instructed the students that they must complete all assignments related to this unit in order to participate in the final activity.  We are going to watch the movie Shiloh, Thursday or Friday, and I am bringing in homemade cornbread and apple juice.  Cornbread was mentioned in the book as one of the food staples in the West Virginia culture which just happens to be where I grew up.  Please encourage your child to finish the assignments.  I do not want any of them to miss the celebration.

May you all have a blessed Thanksgiving with family and friends!

Fall Update

Student council is hosting our annual canned food drive! All canned foods collected during this time are given to Big Shanty families in need during the holidays! Please send in as many cans as you can :) The class with the most cans wins a prize. Currently we have 122 cans!!!

Spring Field Trip update - Remember that you can make partial payments or full payments at any time! At this time we haven't received much money or responses! If your child is going please send in permission forms ASAP! If we don't start getting permission forms and money in soon we may need to pursue other field trip options. We think that this field trip is an EXCELLENT opportunity at a very reasonable cost. The holidays are coming so it might be a good idea to send in payments before the holiday money crunch hits us!

GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!

Autumn Update

Whew - testing is finally over and Autumn is here!  We will wrap up this month with a celebratory snack, provided by Mrs. Andrews, to mark the end of testing AND the end of our Hatchet novel study.  Our Hatchet projects are due this week and the ones that have already come in are terrific!

We are working hard to get back into the "regular schedule" routine after testing. I would like to commend all of the students for doing a great job and staying focused during testing! I will update again later this week with additional class information and October news.

Thanks as always for your continued support!

Super September

We are off to a great start as we begin our journey to prepare for middle school.  We are still getting into a routine and getting to know each other. Some major areas of focus are: organization, time management, and responsibility.  I covered those expectations at Open House and would like to thank you for the cooperation and support you have already given. Please contact me via email(sherry.stuart@cobbk12.org) if or when you have any questions or concerns.  Communication is the key to a successful school year for all of us!
