Spring Time!

Parents,

  We have been learning a lot about habitats, ecosystems, environment and specific habitats of Georgia.

We've had lots of fun making butterfly sandwiches and strawberry short cake.  Your children made a beautiful map labeling the continents, too!

We have been counting the number of days we have been in school (162) and the number of days left in school (15).  Great lesson in place value!

Healthy Eating

Our children are faced with a culture that does not necessarily support healthy eating.  This is national nutrition month, so it is appropriate that we explore what the new food plate looks like. Not only did we make a poster of healthy foods, we made a food plate with choices from meats, breads, vegetables, fruits and milk.  We picked one tiny piece of dessert to indicate the quantity, not necessarily to be included in each meal!  We have been encouraging filling the plate with both vegetables and fruit when going through the school cafeteria line and the kids have been surprised that they actually do like the taste!  We have a great school nutrition plan which includes lots and lots of fresh fruits, healthy vegetables and even the desserts are most usually like a frozen juice bar.  The quality of school lunches has improved tremendously in the past years and you can feel very comfortable that your children have the healthy choices they need for their growing bodies while at school!

Target and Chick Filet CBI trip

Our class was awesome as we went through Target and picked out items for our mothers and just a little something for ourselves.  The kids were all curious, sometimes wanted more than what was on their list, but they got the idea that we don't buy everything we see!  Then we went to Chick Filet for lunch, while each child ordered their own meal.  Some used the pictures, some used their voice and others used both.

I was very proud of their behavior and wanted to compliment you parents for such well behaved kids!

Presidents and Famous Americans

Our class has been learning about early American life around the time of the American Revolution.

We've identified facts and attributes of President George Washington, President Thomas Jefferson,

Benjamin Franklin and we've located their pictures on dollar bills. We studied the wackiest White House pets and the funny stories around them!  Like, George Washington brushed his horses' teeth!

For Black History Month, we've learned about Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks,

Harriett Tubman and George Washington Carver.  We are quickly moving to the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights and the 3 branches of government.  We have identified the American symbols of the Bald Eagle, the Washington Monument and learned interesting facts about the flag.

We're having a great time!

February Social Studies

We've been looking at the 13 colonies, where they are located on a US map, what kinds of products they were known for and the kind of clothing worn.  The kids have been very successful in locating the continents on various world maps, locating the United States and Georgia on maps.  The kids have been answering questions like,

what country do you live in?

what state do you live in?

what city do you live in?

what town do you live in?

what is your full address?

Transition Academy Visit!

We were honored to have the Kennesaw Mountain Transition Academy visit our classes!  The kids were all very social and greeted one another with enthusiasm!  The high schoolers read "The Mitten" each character having it's special voice, to us.  We colored a mitten and got to put animal crackers in it!  Some of us sneeked an animal cookie before it went into the mitten!  We all had a sampling of hot chocolate.

One of the highlights of our visit was a high school student who drew portraits of the children!  They looked just like them!  Their talents are amazing! 

Community Based Instruction

We had an awesome CBI trip to Costco last Wednesday!  Our tour guide shared her responsibilities of how she had to make the store safe.  She showed us the tall shelves that are inspected daily for any shifting so nothing falls, we saw the exit door in case of an emergency such as a weather problem.  We visited the bakery, the meat department and the deli.  The two highlights of our trip was the forklift that could reach to the top of the shelves and we were allowed to go into the huge refrigerator!  They kindly gave us pizza and drinks for lunch!  It was a wonderful trip!

Next Friday, January 27th, Kennesaw Mountain High School Transition Academy students will be visiting our class and read a story and do an activity.  We feel so special with all of the attention we get from others who do this for us on a regular basis!

Happy New Year!

We have been very busy in January with learning about Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and how they influenced the civil rights movement.  We will continue in February with learning about more African Americans during Black History month .

We are starting a unit on the Thirteen Colonies and will contrast the New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies and the Southern Colonies.  We will identify landforms, culture and identify one key historical figure from each region.

Happy Holidays!

Thank you parents for all of your support not just for our holiday party, but all year through.  We couldn't do our jobs without your help.  You are awesome!

We had a wonderful time preparing for our winter holiday vacation!  Today we had five stations of craft projects and rotated the children through each station.  We made jingle bell  necklaces, decorated stockings and cookies and made an edible tree.  Everyone was jolly that's for sure!

When we come back from our break, we will continue working on place value, basic addition, counting, and graphing.  Our reading program is making a real difference in our children's reading abilibites and it focuses right now on beginning sounds and rhyming along with reading stories and writing sentences related to our stories.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Parents,

 Our entire school including Mrs. Hutnick and our area superintendent, Mr. Carter were thrilled that our class participated in the school science fair.  We read a story from News to You about an organization that is researching the best way to clean up oil spills.  So we did the science experiment with the question,

"What method, a cotton ball, strip of fabric, cheese cloth, or spoon would remove the most oil from water in the fastest amount of time?  We discovered that the cheese cloth worked the best.  We wrote up our information and won Honorable Mention in Group Projects!

After Thanksgiving, we will be working on standards in English Language Arts and Math with a holiday theme.  We have lots of writing activities using our specialized programs to offer.  Emphasis will be on how to use a calculator in math.
