This week will be fast but busy as we start a week and a half of standardized testing on Wednesday. You can help your child do as well as possible by making sure that he or she gets plenty of sleep, eats a good breakfast, and is at school on time each morning. I will supply plenty of sharpened pencils and erasers. Water bottles with just water in them are okay but will have to be stored by our sink during testing. Please make sure your child's water bottle is clearly labeled with his or her name. A healthy snack is fine to send too (cheese on crackers, banana, apple, granola bar, small zip loc bag of cereal, please no nut products as we have students with severe allergies in our classroom). If your child tends to feel chilly in air conditioned rooms, then a sweater may be helpful to wear on test days. If your child is running a fever or complaining of illness then it would be better for him or her to stay home and get well rather than try to test, and possibly do poorly due to not being up to the tasks. Results from these tests will take several weeks to be calculated and sent to the school district, then to Big Shanty. The tests are given to help with instructional planning and for county and school wide statistical data collection. The results are not used or recorded as part of a student's report card progress or for any future grade placement.
Our class has had very good attendance this year! Please help us all continue to have great attendance and to be as healthy as possible by reminding your child to wash his or her hands frequently (saying the birthday song twice while washing is the right amount of time to kill germs), especially before and after eating and using the restroom. Also, reminding them not to share food, drinks, and water bottles along with covering their mouth when coughing, or coughing into the crook of their arm if they are wearing a longer sleeved shirt will help cut down the spread of germs. Another great strategy for keeping healthy is to practice keeping hands away from eyes, nose, and mouth. We are wiping down our desks every afternoon with Clorox wipes and we are being careful to throw used tissue in the waste can immediately after we use it. Thank you for helping your child practice these good health tips.
Expect a word study list and our first book report rubric and home craft directions to be sent home on Tuesday this week. We will finish our first social studies unit on government by the end of this week and a study guide will be sent home in our Thursday folder. An assessment will be given on Friday, September 18. Your child will have the choice of writing 2 short paragraphs based on 5 question choices, completing a visual organizer with needed labels, or taking a multiple choice and true/false quiz over the unit.
