It is hard to believe but SSeptember is knocking on our door, and with the new month comes even more new experiences. We started math compacting this week and our class is getting a taste of what it is like to have to organize and move rooms. If at all possible, please try hard to have your child be on time or at school earlier than 7:50. Arriving at or after the bell makes it extremely difficult for our students to be unpacked, have time to use the restroom, pay lunch, and be ready to change classes at 8:05. We will be taking standardized, norm referenced tests (ITBS and COGat) starting next Wednesday, September 9 and those tests are usually started right after announcements (by 8:15). Students who arrive after the test session has started are usually kept in the media center until the next subtest is administered and then are given a make up test if time allows at a later date.
This week we are learning why our US government has different levels and branches. We have discussed how our government is a representative democracy and how it is based on ancient Athens in Greece. We will learn why we need laws and the roles of local, state, and federal government officials.
We are learning different strategies in estimation in math class this week. One of the most familiar ways is "rounding". We will learn how to estimate using a number line, and how scientists estimate larger amounts based on smaller samples. We will be estimating in addition and subtraction for "reasonable solutions" too.
Our class will be DRA (individual reading) tests this week along with studying poetry in reading. We are continuing our descriptive writing and reviewing subjects and predicates in grammar. Whew! It's amazing how much we can do at school!
I hope all of our students' parents can attend Open House this Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. I will show you and discuss the new Cobb County Schools language arts adoptions along with talking about some of the high points this year. I am looking forward to seeing you all!
