• Just a few days remain to purchase 5^th grade dedications, which are found on the final pages of our yearbook.  Simply visit www.bigshantyyearbook.com to purchase an ad for your child or a yearbook.  If you know anyone with a 5^th grader, please pass this info onto them. 

 

• Field trip final payment is due January 27!  If we do not have sufficient funds to cover all students with permission, our trip will be cancelled.  Permission slips will not be accepted for any student currently on roll after January 27.  More information to follow when our trip is confirmed.

 

• January 27th is the 100th day of school.  Bring in 100 pennies for a math activity and to add to our 5th grade fund.

Dec. 12- 5th graders input math scores in I-Respond

Dec. 14- 5th graders take science checkpoint test

Dec. 15- 5th graders input science scores in I-Respond

Dec. 16- Angel Tree donations are due (Please take a snowflake from the tree in the lobby to help a Big Shanty family in need.)

Dec. 19- Last day for early sale on yearbooks (Information went home in Thursday folder) $28 now & $40 after the 19th.

Dec. 22- Holiday Sing-a-long in gym/ Winter Celebration along with Book Exchange from 1:00-2:00

Dec. 23- Furlough Day (no school for students nor teachers)

Winter Break- Dec. 26-Jan.10 for students

Symphony Trip

On Wednesday, December 7th, the 5th grade will take a field trip to the symphony.  The buses will arrive around 9ish.  The teachers are the ONLY chaperones on this trip.  Ideally, we will return in time to eat lunch at the school.  

Important:  Please make sure your child dresses appropriately for going to the symphony.  Your child's first selection should be black, gray, or brown pants.  If you do not have these items, then khakis should be the next choice.  If all of these choices are not in your closet, then you may go for the dark black denim.  Ladies, you may wear your dresses and skirts appropriate for the weather.  The goal is for you child to find the nicest outfit in his/her closet and have that be what they wear on Wednesday.  We will not be having PE on that day.

Up Coming Dates

November 14:  Canned Food Drive ends (Please bring in your canned food items to help those in need!)

Big Shanty is collecting canned food items for families in need.  Each classroom has a box for these cans.  Then, all of the boxes will be collected and sorted.  These food items will go to families who need help providing a Thanksgiving meal for their family. I strongly encourage your child to take just a dollar or two of their allowance to purchase a can or more of food items.  Such a small and simple act that can positively impact someone else.  What a great lesson for your child to learn!  Let's really start bringing in those cans!

November 18: Performing Arts performance in cafeteria (Make sure your child has turned in their Performing Arts permission slip from the beginning of the school year in order to attend.)

November 21-25:  Fall Break/ no school

ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills):  This is a state-wide assessment to determine what the children know and truly understand from the education they have received up to this point.  Middle schools do look at these scores as one of many factors in determining classroom placements for the children.  Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep, eats a full and healthy breakfast, brings a healthy and nutritious snack, and arrives at school as early as possible.  We will begin testing at 8:00am.  You want your child at school by 7:30 (if possible) at the latest, so he/she has time to settle in for the day.  Here is the schedule:

Monday, October 10:  Reading Vocabulary

Tuesday, October 11:  Spelling, Capitalization, Punctuation, and Usage and Expression

Wednesday, October 12: Math

Thursday, October 13:  Social Studies and Science

Field Trip

 
The kids are super excited about our 5th grade field trip in March.  Please be sure your child has returned his/her permission slip so that we may get a head count and plan accordingly.

The first due date for payment is upon us in order to make this trip a go!  If you have paid already ~ thank you!!!  If not, $20 is due on October 7, December 2 and January 27 to meet our payment deadlines with the tour company.

In the letter sent home to you earlier this month, we are offering your a

For an additional $5, your child will also receive a 5^th grade t-shirt.! To take advantage of this deal, please add $5 to the payment (either $65 for the entire trip OR $25 for the October 7 payment).

September Stuff
This week please be on the lookout for information regarding our 5th grade field trip to be sent home in the Thursday folder. We will be heading to Chattanooga again this year with a stop at Ruby Falls, the IMAX theatre and lunch while cruising on a riverboat. On some Friday mornings, we will have a Chick Fil-A biscuit sale to help us in fundraising for this trip. We've tried our best to keep the price of this trip at a minimum; however, we will not be permitted to go unless we have funds to cover every child attending. Also, check out the limited deal for our 5th grade t-shirt!

Open House - Thursday, August 18
Big Shanty's Open House will be held on Thursday, August 18 beginning at 6:00 PM with the PTA meeting in the cafeteria. Session 1 will follow from 6:30-7:00. Session 2 will be from 7:30-8:00 for you to attend if you have other children attending Big Shanty or an informational session about Target will be hosted in the cafeteria with Mrs. Burke & Mr. McAllister.

Feb. 8th Math Night

Feb. 10th and 11th are the days scheduled for Human Growth and Development for fifth graders. Please remember to send in the permission slip form in as soon as possible. Your child cannot attend with out it.

Feb 10th is also the Big Shanty Book Fair at Barnes and Noble on Barrett Parkway. It begins at 5pm and runs until 8pm. Come Join the fun!
