Spelling Poem-- Week of September 10, 2007

Get Out of Bed!

By

Shore

“Get out of Bed, you silly fool!

Get up right now, it’s time for school.

If you don’t dress without a fuss

I’ll throw you on the bus!”

“Oh, Mom, don’t make me go today.

I’m feeling worse than yesterday.

You don’t know what I’m going through.

I’ve got a strange, rare case of flu.”

“My body aches, my throat it sore.

I’m sure I’m knocking on deaths door.

You can’t send me to school- achoo!-

‘Cause everyone could get it, too.

“Besides, the kids despise me there.

They always tease and always stare.

And all the teachers know my name

When something’s wrong, it’s me they blame.”

“You faked a headache yesterday.

Don’t pull that stuff on me today.

Stop acting like a silly fool-

The principal cannot skip school!”

Welcome to September!!!

Fall Welcome to a brand new month of learning and fun!  Hopefully by now everyone is getting more into the routine of 3rd grade and feeling more secure with classwork routines.  Again whenever you have any questions as issues come about, please send a note or an email.  We are excited about the Fernbank coming to our school to make a special presentation on Rocks and Minerals.  As of right now, as a whole we do not have enough money collected to pay the deposit for the in school field trip.  If you are able to send in your money ($4.00)and you haven't, please do so as soon as possible, so that we do not have to cancel the presentation.  T-shirt orders will also be tallied next Friday. If you want your child to have a 3rd grade class T-shirt, please do so by then.  The cost is ($6.00).

In Math we are still reviewing place value and elasped time, but are moving into 3-4 digit addition and subtraction.  Continue to practice basic math facts with your kids, as this is pertinent as we move into multiplication.

Flat_stanley Flat Stanley's have been sent home for decoration. Please help your child come up with fun and creative ideas for their own personalized Stanley that will reflect their personality and style! I would like to have these ready to mail within the next couple of weeks.  Also if you are able to send in stamps to help with the postage, that would be greatly appreciated.  And if you have not send in an address where your child's Stanely can be mailed, please try to do that this week as well!

We have had a wonderful time learning about rocks.  We still have to work on finishing up our rock cycles.  Right now we are doing webquests on fossils. Fossils The kids are doing online research and learning about how fossils are found and all the valuable information that scientist learn from them and how they are directly related to the types of rocks that we have been studying for the past couple of weeks!

Let's get moving!!!

What a great start we have had!  We are all having a great time getting to know each other and getting to know the new school!

Please remember that Open House is this Tuesday, August 21 at 6:30pm.  It will begin with a PTA meeting followed by two question and answer sessions in the classroom for your convenience.  Come with your questions, comments, and concerns (AND your suggestions).  If you are not able to make it, please don't forget that you can email me at mechelle.blue@cobbk12.org or send me a note at ANY time!

Rock This week we will begin science and a 2 week unit on ROCKS and MINERALS.  We will be studying the rock cycle and the formation of rocks and minerals.  The students will be exploring the content through books, videos, experiments, and WEBQUESTS (online group research activities). The unit will be concluding with the students performing the tasd of creating their own rock cycle diagram in class. Here is a great website created by the students and teachers at our own KSU where the kids can explore resources on their own. http://edtech.kennesaw.edu/web/rocks.html

Math In Math for the next couple of weeks we will be reviewing representing numbers to ten thousand and elasped time.  Point out big numbers as you see them and use them in daily life.  Also talk about the time difference between activities as you go on about your daily schedule (i.e.  How much time passed between the beginning of football practice and the end of football practice?).  Also remember to continue to practice addition and subtraction math facts!  You can do this online by visiting these sites:

http://www.aplusmath.com/

http://math.about.com/library/blmathfacts.htm

http://www.math.com/students/practice/arithmeticpractice.htm

IReadingn Language Arts we will be talking about the components of Traditional Literature (folktales, fantasies, etc) and how to respond to literature in your writing.  Right now we are focusing on coming up with ideas for your writing and how to begin.  In reading we have been working on the components of a successful Reader's Workshop.  My key focus this year in reading is: READING IS THINKING!!!!  We want to be able to understand not just be able to pronounce the words!

Flat_stanley We are also currently reading Flat Stanley. When we are done we will make and mail off Flat Stanley's of our own.  If you have not returned an address that you want your child's Stanley mailed off to, please try to do so within the next couple of weeks.  Stanley's will be coming home for you to decorate with your child shortly.

Thanks again for a great first week.  Continue to send in signed forms and any supplies you may need to send.  We do have enough packs of lined paper and kleenex! ALSO PLEASE PUT ALLL MONEY THAT YOU SEND IN A WHITE ENVELOPE WITH YOUR CHILD'S NAME, GRADE, MY NAME, AND PURPOSE OF MONEY. This money will go in one of the black safes.
