April already! CRCT begins this week. We have a few suggestions for testing. Please make sure that your child has a good night's sleep, a healthy breakfast, and has a nutritious snack and water each day. Students, please be on time for school.
Thank you to all who participated in the spring carnival on Friday. We had a GREAT time.
Our calendar for May is filling up rapidly. We'll send home a copy in next Thursday's folder. Also, on Tuesday Academic Alerts and Academic Progress Reports will be sent home. Please be sure to sign and return those as soon as possible.
We look forward to beginning our unit on World War II and the remaining decades in the twentieth century. Also, we are going to begin measurement in Math soon - with lots of "hands on" activities. Be prepared to measure!
As always, if you should have any questions, please email either Mrs. Guest or Mrs. Johnson.

Spring has arrived! With spring has come an abundance of activities for Big Shanty.
On Monday, March 24, the counselor and some students from Awtrey will visit us to share some insight before we venture to Awtrey on Wednesday. Also on Monday, our class will take the SRI (reading inventory) for our spring data.
On Tuesday, the counselor from Palmer will visit with those students who will be attending Palmer next year. The visit to Palmer will take place later in the school year.
Wednesday brings our trip to Awtrey, the Unit 7 pretest for Math, and the Big Shanty Chorus will be singing the National Anthem at the Atlanta Hawks game that evening. Thursday brings the fourth IMI pretest for fifth grade. Saturday will be the school clean up day. Bring your workgloves and muscles to help clean up around the campus.
April Fool's Day is a big day at Big Shanty. We are presenting Authors' Night right after the PTA meeting at 6:30. We'll have activities in many of the classrooms for three sessions. You'll be able to see some of the various ways we read, write, and perform our work. Come join the fun! Parents, students, and siblings are invited.
The fifth grade will take our field trip to the Chattanooga Aquarium and Raccoon Caverns on April 2. We'll leave at 8:00 and return at 5:30. Your child will have a letter with specific information regarding what to bring, how to dress, itinerary, and other pertinent facts on Monday. We look forward to having a GREAT trip.
Friday will be the last day before Spring Break.......I hope everyone has a restful and enjoyable spring break. We'll all return ready to continue our journey through fifth grade.
We'll be studying the World Wars, finishing Hatchet, and studying terms for our trip to Chattanooga.
Please contact us if you have any questions.

March has arrived! Just as March is traditionally a windy month, our schedule is a whirlwind of activity.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE FLOWERS, CARDS, GIFTS, AND THOUGHTS DURING TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK. We really have enjoyed the flowers adorning the room. Your thoughtfulness and kindness are overwhelming. THANK YOU!
We continue to work with fractions in Math - PLEASE help your child learn his/her basic facts. You should be seeing a math assignment nightly. Our literature unit this month is a study of Hatchet, a book by Gary Paulsen. The books need to stay at school, but we will have work to be done both at home and school. Your child may want to check out a copy of the book or purchase one to have a book at home. We'll incorporate Social Studies, writing, vocabulary, and map skills as well as reading in this study. World War I is soon to begin in our class......who, what, where, when, why and how. Many students have already shown an interest in the topic.
Just a reminder that when your child is absent, we need to have a note to excuse the absence. If you know ahead of time that your child is going to be out, we can get together assignments beforehand so that the student won't have so much to do upon his/her return.
Monday, March 3 is the absolute deadline for payment and permission forms for the field trip to Chattanooga. At that time we shall determine whether or not we have enough funds to go.
Below is a calendar of events in March (of which we are aware so far). Please contact us if you have any questions.

Dear Parents: ll continue with our current Science units for a few more weeks. Our work with vocabulary and spelling will be the same as before the holiday. Reading will incorporate work both with the reading book and with novel studies. Some short-term projects will be done during the next two months. Please make sure that your child has adequate school supplies. Each student needs a pack of wide-ruled notebook paper, a few pencils (not mechanical pencils), colored pencils or crayons, a pair of scissors, and a highlighter. The students should dress in layers for school. Our hallways can be chilly and a sweater or sweatshirt is recommended.
