We Are Off to a Great Start!!!

Thank you for making the opening to our school year a huge success!!!  I enjoyed meeting with so many parents at Orientation on Tuesday.  If you were unable to attend, the materials covered were sent home with your student.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

The students are adjusting well to our classroom routines and procedures.  I hope the students are communicating with you about how we do things in our classroom.  Parent support and encouragement makes for a smooth start!!

Please ask to see Agendas an Progress Update Cards (PUC) daily.  PUC's need  to be initialed each day.  Students are encouraged to use the Agenda as a "To Do" list. Assignments, etc. are recorded at school.  They should be completed and reviewed at home.  You can also help by reminding students to keep all papers and materials behind  the correct tab in their binder.  Everything has a home!

FUN FOR ALL!!!!     We are learning how to collect, organize, graph, and analyze data in math.  These are skills we will use throughout the year in all subject areas.  Students have started going to Miss Kennedy for science.  Her unit focuses on states of matter.  We are reviewing map skills in Social Studies and will begin learning about the events that contributed to the start of the Civil War.  In language arts we are getting started with Reading Workshop.  Students will take the Scholastic Reading Inventory soon.  This will help them with appropriate book selection.  We will also talk about the Accelerated Reader program as well as Independent Reading Logs very soon.  In Writing Workshop, our focus is on the sentence!  We are learning how to write and correctly use the four types of sentences (declarative, exclamatory, imperative, and interrogative) to communicate effectively.  WOW!!  So much going on!!!

THANKS A MILLION......................for all of the supplies and "Wish List" items that you have sent in, and for filling out the endless stack of forms that went home the first week of school.  We are most appreciative!!!

FYI--- We are in need of a volunteer to be a co-room parent for our class this year.  One person has offered to share this task with another person.  Please let me  know if you are willing and able!!  I want this year to be very special and memorable for our fifth graders!!

Welcome to 5th Grade!!!!

Hello all!!!  I am excited that you are joining us for this year's journey of learning adventures!  Lots of information will be coming your way during the first few days and weeks of school.  I hope to see all of you at PTA Parent Orientation Night on Tuesday, August 21st.

We will spend the first few weeks of school getting to know each other, so I will start by telling you a few things about me!  This is my 5th year teaching 5th grade at Big Shanty, which makes it a very special year for me!! I have also taught in Paulding County and at other schools in Cobb County. I am a graduate of The University of Georgia and completed my Masters of Education at State University of West Georgia.  I am a proud Bulldog fan!  Goooooooo Dawgs!  I am married and have two great kids, Ethan and Claire.  Ethan is off to Kindergarden this year and Claire is 2.  We have two black labs named Fletch and Maggie.  Our kids and dogs keep us well entertained!!!  I love to read and visit museums with my family.

We will have great fun this school year!!!  We will begin math with a unit on data analysis.  Social studies will kick off with the Civil War (How lucky are we to live in such a historic city?). Students will change classes for the first Science unit of the year.  Our writing focus will begin with informational and persuasive writing.  We will spend the first few weeks in reading reviewing strategies that good readers use to understand and enjoy different types of text material.  We will also revisit independent reading book selection.

So.............., LET'S GET STARTED ON YOUR BEST YEAR EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
