FEBRUARY NEWS!!!

Thanks for attending conferences!!  It was a pleasure meeting with all of you!!  I appreciate your continued support as we head into a very busy time of the school year!  I also want to thank the many parents and Thanks students who purchased books at the book fair for our class library!!  The students are really enjoying the new additions!           Worms

Please encourage your child to use the CRCT Practice Testing on line.  Hang on to the log-in and student password information sheet handed out at conferences.  I have the same information at school so that students can practice as time allows, but I would encourage students to take two or three practice tests each week from home.  Parents can take the tests with students, talking them through the use of important testing strategies.  These practice test build confidence as well.  Please let me know if you have any questions about this great resource!!

Remind1 AN IMPORTANT REMINDER FOR PARENTS!

Please keep a very close eye on the papers coming home in the Thursday Folder each week.  It includes many important notices about events/dates/deadlines that relate directly to our 5th graders, especially during this VERY busy time of the year! This is our primary home-school communication tool. I really encourage students to go through the folder WITH you instead of tossing it at you as they walk in the door!!  The papers are important to them, and to you as parents. Some require a signature, or response of some kind. Please set aside some extra time on Thursday evenings for this.  I don't want anyone to miss out on the many fantastic opportunities our school has to offer!

Fieldtrp Planning for our BIG 5th grade field trip has begun!!  This is always an exciting event for our students!!  It is always great fun, but it is not free, so start saving money now!!  More details about our destination, date, and cost will be sent home very soon!!  Look for it in the Thursday folders!

The Holidays Are Here!!!!!!

It seems impossible, but we are quickly approaching the highly anticipated Holiday Break!!  This is a fun and busy time of the year.  Let me update you on the "Fun Stuff"!

  • Our class Holiday party will be Friday, December 21st.  Mrs. Vella has sent a letter home with information and requests for help.  A BIG THANKS to her for organizing this event for us!!!  She is a great Room Parent!!  Students will make a craft before lunch (12:00) and will enjoy refreshments after lunch (1:15).
  • As part of the celebration and in keeping with the spirit of giving, each student is asked to bring in a small trinket or candy to give to each of their classmates.  We currently have 24 students, but you may want to send in a couple of extra.  Some favorite ideas from the past have included pencils, stickers, individually wrappped candy, erasers, party favors, etc.  It is not necessary to spend  a lot of money.  Small ,inexpensive items are most appropriate!!!  Each student will be provided a stocking and will enjoy filling them with fun, little gifts from their  classmates!!  You may send in the items at anytime.  Please put them in a bag or container labeled with your child's name.
  • Our class will be making a few Holiday crafts and need a few items from you to help!!!  Please send in empty toilet paper rollers as you finish with them.  We will make a treasure from this trash! Send as many as you have as soon as you have them!  Students will also need a small (wallet size) photo of themselves.  School pictures from this year or last work best.  A snapshot will work also.

We are also working hard as we approach the Holidays.  We are studying the Industrial Revolution and Immigration in Social Studies.  Students are practicing effective persuasive writing techniques, and we continue to develop and practice many important non-fiction reading strategies.  We are finishing up whole number and decimal computation and modeling in math.  The fun never ends!!!  I have included information below that I think will be helpful for you to know as we near the end of the second nine weeks of this school year!

  • "Creative Catalog"  book project is due Wednesday, Dec. 19th.  Students are working on them daily in class, but also need to spend some time each night working on this project.  They really need your help with proofreading their catalogs.  Please ask to see your child's project throughout the week to be sure they are "on track" for finishing it by the due date.
  • Our next math unit will be fractions and will begin after the winter break.  Your child MAY be assigned a new math teacher depending on the results of the pretest.  Please continue to practice basic multiplication facts.  Mastery of these is an important key to their success in math!!
  • Independent Reading continues to be an important part of our reading program in the 5th grade.  Please monitor your child's independent reading time at home.  Ask them about the book they are currently reading on a regular basis to be sure they are making good progress in this area!!  Reading Logs will resume after the first of the year!
  • Thanks for sending in notes about transportation changes!!!  It is such a HUGE help to me!!!  I want to make sure your kids get home safe and sound each day.  With so many involved in after-school activities, it is sometimes confusing and hectic.  Your note serves as a reminder for students and peace-of-mind for you and me!!!
  • Don't forget to send in a written excuse from you or a physician's note if and when your child is absent from school.  The county is required to keep an accurate and detailed record of student attendance.
  • We are in need of more baby wipes for the classroom.  We do our best to keep our learning environment clean and as germ-free as possible.  We are almost out!!!  Please put us on your grocery list!!!
  • Please help your students get to bed early enough to get a full night's rest!!! They are growing fast and using a lot of energy during this phase of their development.  Plenty of sleeps helps them to focus and keeps them happy throughout the day!
  • Students return to school on Tuesday, January 8th.  Report cards will be sent home on Friday, January 11th.
  • Monday, January 21st is a School Holiday for students and teachers!
  • Conference Week begins Tuesday, January 22nd and continues through Monday, January 28th.  These will be early release days for students.  More information about conferences will follow after the break.

As always, thanks for your continued support!!!  Enjoy a wonderful Holiday Season!!!!!

November already????  Where has the time gone??  I have some important updates to share!!

I am proud to have so many students participating in activities and clubs outside of our classroom!!

Our Student Council Representative is Kelly Reidesel.  She was also elected Student Council President!  She is helping our class participate in the annual canned food drive.  Please remember this worthy cause on your next trip to the store.  The food collected goes directly to families from our Big Shanty.  We hope to fill up our classroom collection boxes!!

CONGRATULATIONS  to Caleb Perez for winning in multiple categories for the Reflections Contest, sponsored by the PTA!!!  He won FIRST PLACE in video presentation and photography!!!  He placed THIRD in the visual arts category!!!  He will represent us well at the Tom Mathis level of this awesome competition!!  GOOD JOB!!!!!

We have several students working hard to put together the best yearbook ever!!  Na Yien, Danielle, Abbie, Hannah, Sarah, Alycia, and Michael W. are doing a great job on this important project!!!  DON'T FORGET....Yearbooks are on sale NOW!!!  Order yours before the price increase later in the school year!!

Our soon to be "American Idol" superstars are Jameela and Alycia.  They are members of our school chorus.

Lucy Clay is a member of our Big Shanty Elementary News (BSEN) team.  We enjoy their weekly broadcasts, and especially love seeing one of our very own on the team!

We have excellent representation on the Safety Patrol!!  Connor, Ashleigh, and Josh keep the hallways safe both morning and afternoon!!  They serve as role models for the student population as well!!!

The first year of Robotics has been quite a success so far!!  Na Yien, Caleb, and Nicholas are members of this club.  They are currently preparing for their first competition!

Our resident artist is Emily.  She participates in the Young Rembrandt class.  Her artistic talent is amazing!!

ADDITIONAL REMINDERS AND UPDATES:

Students received their first Reading Log this week.  Reading Logs are designed to help students monitor their independent reading at home.  They must be signed weekly by a parent to get full credit. I hope your child has shown you a copy of it.  It is helpful to discuss and formulate a daily reading plan.  The first Log is due Friday, November 2nd.  New Reading Logs will be assigned each week, and are always due on Friday.  Please let me know if you have any questions!! Remember--WE READ TO SUCCEED!!!!

Please help your child study basic multiplication facts.  Memorization is essential for success in math.  Everyone needs daily practice to develop and maintain skills.

I hope you all have a fun and safe Halloween!!  It is a great time to be a kid, but please remember that costumes and accessories are not permitted at school!!  Also, candy should not be eaten at school, even with lunch!!!  We want to promote healthy eating habits.

There are two student Holidays coming up---November 5th and 6th.  I hope you will take this opportunity do do something fun with your family, or simply rest up for the quickly approaching Holiday Season that is right around the corner!!!!
