We have made great progress in fitness testing!  Both Day 1,2 and 3 and Day 4,5, and 6 have just about completed all the testing.  We really appreciate how hard all the students worked on the tests.  we look forward to getting all the scores and seeing who will earn an award!  We will send home the test results after Field Day.

Thanks you all so much for the many parents who have signed up to help us with Field Day.  We could not do it without you !  The kids all love Field Day and love that you are there to help and to watch them have fun.  We can still use a few more volunteers in each grade level, so it's never to late to volunteer!  Please call us or email us  or send a note with your student.  We would love to hear from you.

Our next unit will be a whiffle ball unit.  We will be hitting and throwing and catching.  The students always enjoy this unit.  We will play some whiffle ball games and maybe some rag ball games.  We look forward to being outside and enjoyin g this beautiful spring weather.

Field Day is rapidly approaching and we are planning lots of fun activities.  We sent home parent volunteer forms in the Thursday folders yesterday.  Please consider volunteering to help Field Day be a big success.  Fill out the form and send it back to the PE teachers.Field Day is Friday, May 16, with a rain date of Monday, May 19.

We are in the middle of fitness testing.  Please help your students to remember to wear comfortable clothing for the test.  Jeans hurt if you are doing sit ups.  We look forward to sharing their test results with you.  We will continue fitness testing after spring break.  Keep practicing all the events while you are "on break".

Have a safe and fun Spring Break!

Fitness Testing

We have just finished a fun unit on track and field and one on racket skills.  The kids really enjoy those activities.  We are starting our Fitness Testing .  We have worked hard with the students practicing the parts of the test where they need work.  Our hope is that all of them will pass with flying colors!  We test  the kids on cardiovascular endurance with the Mile Run, abdonimal strength with situps, upper body strength with pullups and flexed arm hang, flexibility with sit and reach and agility  with the shuttle run.  Most of the students enjoy seeing how well they can doand getting their scores.  Later we will send home a copy of how each student did on the test.

Remember that Field Day is coming up  Friday, May16 and we need lots of volunteers to help us run an fun day!

Big Shanty,You are awesome!  What a fantastic job all of you did for Jump Rope For Heart!  At present, you raised $10,335.65!  You surpassed our goal and out did yourselves.  The American Heart Association is very proud of you!  Many schools did not do better than last year, but we did!  Way to go, Big Shanty!

We have started talking about fitness again.  Our fitness test for spring will begin at the end of March.  Hopefully we will finish before Spring break.  If you practice on a consistent basis, every day or every other day, your scores will show it!  We would love to double the number of students receiving awards this spring.

Other units we will be working on before fitness testing are track and field and rackets.  We are looking forward to getting outside more often with beautiful spring weather.

Keep practicing and stay fit!

Jump Rope for Heart

Big Shanty will be having our Jump Rope for Heart from February 4 through February 12.  We will jump during PE time and all of our students will  get to participate.  Those students who wish to collect money will turn it to the PE teachers at the end of their Jump Rope for Heart session.  We really look for to raising more  money for the American Heart Association than we did last year.  Our goal for this year is $11,000.

In other news, we have finished our juggling unit and the kids were awesome!  Several of our 5th graders will be demonstrating our skill progressions and showing off their abilities at the February 5th PTA.  We really look forward to that!  We will also be demonstrating some of our jump rope skills at the exhibition.  Hope to see lots of you there!

Happy Holiday

We hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday!  Remember to get some exercise even when it is cold, especially after eating all the yummy holiday food!

We will finish our dance unit before we break for the holiday.  The students have had lots of fun with all the dances!  We are now ready to Electric Slide and ChaCha slide at holiday parties!

Upcoming units are juggling and tumbling.  Please keep in mind that Jump Rope for Heart will be the beginning of February and information will be coming home January 17.  There will be online donations available again this year.

P.E. has been busy with hockey, basketball, and volleyball as of late. We still continue to work on our fitness skills as well. Please schedule in time for exercise over the holidays.

October 22, 2007

We just finished a unit of football skills.  Our next unit is soccer and then gym hockey.  We are looking forward to these units as the kids really like them!
Our classes are improving on our daily exercises.  We see much improvement since August!  Practicing each day really makes a difference. We want to encourage all our students to exercise every day. Play outside, work on stretches or exercises inside.  It will make a difference in their physical heath and their mental alertness.
If you don't have a healthy body, where are you going to live?
We are very proud of all our students who received the Presidential or National Fitness award.   Those students worked very hard.  We look forward to even more students receiving an award during spring testing.  Keep practicing!
