Three Weeks to Go!

Students worked very hard during the CRCT.  I am very proud of TEAM ECONOMOU!  We do still have 3 weeks of school left, so encourage your child to continue to do their best.  School is not out yet!

All books must be returned to the school library on Tuesday May 6th.  I have asked that students go to their local library and check out a reading book.    Students have worked very hard on their reading this year and have shown great gains in their reading skills.  It is very important that your child continues to read at home this summer.  Encourage them to read by taking them to your local library!

Student Enrollment Forms for the 2009-2010 school year went home in last weeks Thursday folder.  Many have already returned these forms.  If you have not returned yours, do so ASAP.

The PE staff is looking for BIG WHEELS and crutches to be used on Field Day.  If you have either to donate, please contact one of the PE teachers.

Field Day is May 15th. This is a wonderful activity for our students.  Forms went home last week for parents to volunteer to help.  If you can help, please return the form ASAP.

If you would like your child's report card mailed, and have not sent in stamps, please send in two stamps.  If the stamps are not sent, you will have to pick up your child's report card.

A "Used Book Sale" sponsored by the Student Council will be held in the cafeteria. Students will be able to purchase books for 25 cents. Please consider donating books.

Field Trip

Our trip to the Cobb Youth Museum was awesome!

Students saw a wonderful puppet show about Ben Franklin.

They also relived the events leading up to the Revolutionary War.

Ask your child to tell you about the part he/she played.

This was a wonderful introduction to our current

Social Studies unit on the Revolutionary War.

Science

We are currently studying about the planets and our solar system.

It is November!

It is hard to believe that we are entering our 4th month of school. Parents please continue to check your students Reading Log and encourage them to read at least 20-30 minutes nightly. On Thursday 10/30 an AR list went home so that you could see the AR tests that your child has taken.  A report from StudyIsland was also sent so that you could see your child's scores on various reading skills.  You can have your child work on StudyIsland at home if you have internet access.

We are currently finishing up our unit on Native Americans and many students have done an excellent job with their diorama.  We will begin our study of Early Explorers.

In Science a Parent Newsletter was sent home that gave many interesting web sites and activities that you could discuss with your child about simple machines.

Please continue to have your child study their math facts.  We are finishing up our study of multiplication and division and will begin our unit on Geometry.

Thank you for partnering with me to see that your child has a successful year!

Team Economou

Our class motto is "Racing for Success". To be successful we  are studying Stephen Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People".  This week we are focusing on:

The Personal Bank Account

How you feel about yourself is like a bank account.  Let’s call it your personal bank account (PBA).  Just like a checking or savings account at a bank, you can make deposits into and take withdrawals from your PBA by the things you think, say, and do.  For example, when I stick to a commitment I’ve made to myself, I feel in control.  It’s a deposit….. Cha-Ching. On the other hand, when I break a promise to myself, I feel disappointed and make a withdrawal.

                                     SCIENCE TEST ON FRIDAY

We will have our first Science test this Friday.  Students should know the meanings of the last five spelling words this week and be able to apply them to drawings of the water cycle.  Students will also need to know the three states of matter and how these are represented by water, ice and clouds/steam.   A study guide was sent home Monday.

Reading Log

One of our standards is for children to read 25 books or the equivalent of one million words each year.  To do this your child needs to read at home for homework 15-20+ minutes per night. Students will need to attempt a total of 25 AR points within their ZPD(not too easy or too difficult) every quarter.  Students are allowed to check out books from the media center each morning & when they have free time during class.  Please sign your child’s reading log nightly.

Math

Encourage your child to study their math facts nightly.  Have them recite them out loud to you.  It is important that these facts are memorized.

REMINDER OPEN HOUSE IS THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 4TH at 6:30 p.m.

PLEASE return ANY FORMS/CARDS THAT WERE SENT HOME THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL

Feel free to email me at    jahnie.economou@cobbk12.org
