I hope that everyone had a great winter break. We have been quite busy since school has started back. We are very excited to have a student teacher from Kennesaw State University, Mrs. Garcia and would like to welcome her to our class. She will be with us until the end of April.
Well, we 've made it through the first week of 2009. The kids returned ready to learn and excited about being back at school. I want to thank all of you for returning your conference scheduling forms so quickly. I can't wait to talk to each of you about how your child is doing both in academics and behavior. During conference week we will be having another Book Fair. Just as before, the profit goes towards the school.
In social studies, we have been working with some biographies and learning about history. So far we have learned about Paul Revere. Ask your child to tell you why Mr. Revere was important in helping the United States become an independent country. Next week we will begin learning about Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass, and, the following week, we will begin learning about Mary McLeod Bethune. These are all very interesting people who have done amazing things for our country!
In math, we have started our new unit of study. Some of us started with measurement while others started with fractions. Students who are in my math group received the first project for the new year. It is called "If You Hopped Like a Frog" and will not be due until February 6, 2009.
In writing, we will be learning how to write to persuade our audience. As we prepare for our persuasive writing for this nine weeks, we will spend time reading books with persuasive themes. As we read, we will discuss facts and opinions the author provides to support his or her thoughts.
In science, we wrapped our unit on fossils and would like to thank Cameron's dad Mr. Laposata who was so kind as to bring in a rock with many fossils and allow us the chance to dig for them. We will start our new unit on magnets. We will learn how magnets use invisible forces to attract and repel objects.
In reading, we will learn how to read and comprehend fiction text. Our focus this week will be to determine the plot of fiction text. We will read several books and complete a plot organizer to identify the plot of the text.
