CRCT

The CRCT takes place next week.  Here is the schedule:

Tuesday, April 21:        Reading
Wednesday, April 22:    Language Arts
Thursday, April 23:      Math
Friday, April 24:         Science
Monday, April 27:        Social Studies

Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep every night, eats a healthy breakfast every morning, arrives to school EARLY (the doors open at 7:15am), and brings a healthy snack to eat each day.  If your child is late, they will not be able to test in their regular classroom enviroment.  Please make sure to arrive on time.  Our lunch time will be the same (10:45-11:15).  Special Areas will last from 12:20-12:45.  It is very important for your child to be at schoo, on time, and ready to test every day. If they are here everyday for testing your child will be rewarded a free  Atlanta Braves Ticket.

We will take time each afternoon to play review games in preparation for the next day's test.

Conferences

Thank you so much to all of you, for making an effort to come in and speak about your child's success and challenges.  It means alot to a teacher, when every single parent was able to speak to me regarding their child.  I hope you found the meetings just as beneficial.  Please know anytime you feel we need to talk I am here and easy to reach via email.  Jane.Collins@cobbk12.org

Carnival Basket

Spring Carnival is an exciting time.  Our classroom basket theme is action figures.  Please help us make this a great success by have a really full basket of goodies.  Some of the students have suggested Power Rangers, GI Joe and Star Wars.  I think this can include accessories too.  Look forward to seeing you there on Friday, April 17th.  We have already recieved several boxes, keep on bringing them in.

CRCT Q & A: You've Got Questions! We've Got Answers!

  Now is the time to bring all your questions regarding the CRCT. Teachers will be here to answer your questions/concerns and show you some great resources to help your child prepare for the CRCT in April!. One lucky student in each grade level will get a FREE CRCT study book thanks to our wonderful PTA! Also, the class with the highest attendance will receive a pizza party!

Big Shanty’s 2008-2009 Relay for Life team will also be selling Chick-fil-A sack dinners for $5.00 starting at 5:30pm. This includes 1 Chick-fil-A sandwich, chips, a cookie, and a drink.  These will be 1st come 1st serve. Please consider eating dinner with us and helping out this great cause!!!

CONFERENCE WEEK

Monday, January 26th through Friday, January 30th is our Early Release. Our day will end at 12:15 all week so we can meet for conferences.  I look forward to meeting with each of you.  We will be handing report cards out this week during your conference time.  See you soon.

 

Subject Areas

Reading:

 The class has started reading a nonfiction book on important figures from our past.  They are reading about people like Amelia Earhart, King Tut, Mark Twain and many other fascinating people.  They are taking the information from their books and will complete a nonfiction response board.  We are completing all this in class.  Then they will take their story board and write an informational paper about their person.

Math:

We have about wrapped up this 9 weeks in math.  Can you believe it?  We are finishing our times test and will have the ice cream celebration on Friday the 12th.  We are learning about the 3 kinds of triangles, circles and geometry.  This includes, scalene, right and isosceles triangle, acute angle, right angle, obtuse angle, circle, quadrilateral, diameter and radius. Vocabulary is a big focus in this part of the unit.  Take any chance to let your child show you these geometric figures around the house.

Social Studies:

After the winter holidays the students will be studying historical figure that set the foundation for our country, laws, and freedoms we now have. Some of these people include Paul Revere (independence), Frederick Douglass (civil rights), Susan B. Anthony (women's rights), Mary McLeod Bethune (education), Franklin D. Roosevelt (New Deal and World War II), Eleanor Roosevelt (United Nations and Human Rights), Thurgood Marshall (civil rights), Lyndon B. Johnson (Great Society and voting rights), and Cesar Chavez (workers' rights.) This is going to be a great history lesson.
