5/11-5/15  Used Book Sale

Monday - Thursday:  Books will be sold for 25 cents a piece.  On Friday, the cost of the books will  be 10 cents a piece.  Your child may be able to find some great summer reading literature to enjoy!

5/15 Field Day

Volunteers are to report at 8:10

Field Day begins at 8:30 and will end about 11:00.

Reading

We have been reading the book, Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary and the students have been busy completing summaries after each chapter using the story elements as a guide.  We have read both orally and silently and shared connections as we read.  Today, the students selected a favorite character to do a character web on and we used the computer program inspiration to publish our webs. There are other books by Beverly Cleary that the students might want to explore as they read this summer, too.

"Mother's Day Celebration"

Your child should have brought home an invitation in their Thursday folder regarding a special celebration we will have next Friday, May 8th at 1:00.  Please R.S.V.P. by detatching and returning the bottom portion of your invitation.  The students are very excited and are working on some very special surprises.

Looking forward to seeing you next week.  Please note that grandmothers, aunts, etc., are welcome, too.  Also, Dads may come since we will not be in school for Father's Day.

CRCT Testing

Just a reminder that our CRCT testing begins tomorrow, so I reminded the studehts to go to bed early and to eat a nutritious breakfast in the morning.  I am also encouraging them to bring a healthy snack this week. We wil take the reading portion tomorrow, the Language Arts on Wednesday, Math  on Thursday, Science on Friday, and Social Studies on Monday (27th).  Remember to have your child at school on time as we will begin preparing to test at 8:00 A.M.. Thanks for your support.  Also, homework will not be assigned this week due to testing, so no spelling test on Friday.  We will also not be compacting this week after today and will resume compacting on Tuesday, April 28th. 

Zoo Trip Essentials

The following is a list of what your child needs to have on Thursday for our field trip to the zoo:

1 sleeping bag/1 pillowor a bedroll ( 1 sheet and 1 blanket rolled up together and 1 pillow)

pajamas or shorts/t-shirt (no nightgowns, please)

Change of underwear and socks ( a couple of pairs in case of rain)

Students should wear the same shirt and jeans on Friday that they wore on Thurs. so please do not pack a change of clothes.

Toothbrush and toothpaste (labeled with child's name)

Lightweight jacket or heavy sweater (if weather is cold, then pack a warmer jacket, gloves, and hat if needed)

Gym shoes only!!  Our students will be walking throughout the entire tripin many environments.  Shoes must be rubber soled and completely closed so as to protect feet.  No sandals, flip flops, or crocs per teh zoo request!

Any prescribed medicine.  It must be inthe original container with the dose and instructions and given to the teacher.  It will be administered by the teacher only!

Money forthe gift shop and/or ice cream.  Staff and chaperones will not be responsible for lost or stolen money or lost or stolen student purchases.  please limit money to $10.00 and place it within a ziploc baggie or coin purse with your child's name and teacher's name.

Disposable camera for animal photos.  Please label with your child's name.  We strongly suggest disposables instead of digital cameras.  Chaperones and staff will not be responsible for lost or stolen cameras.

**All of the above items should fit in your child's emptied book bag except for the bedding and pillow.  Please remove your child's binder and school materials.  If your child is planning to stay in ASP, please be sure they have their backpack already packed for the zoo and at school Thurs. morning.

Please do not bring:

candy or snacks.  The zoo requests no wrappers and they will provide a zoo friendly snack Thursday evening and breakfast on Friday morning.  Students may purchase  a snack Friday with their money.

No stuffed animals or toys of any kind. There is no down time.

No books, video games, or electronic devices including mp3 players or I-pods.

No suitcases

Upcoming Zoo Trip

Our zoo trip is scheduled for Thursday, March 26th.  We will leave for the zoo promptly at 5:00 so the students attending the trip must be at school and in our classroom by 4:30 to prepare to leave.  Please be sure to read the information your child will be bringing home this week as to what they need to bring.  Your child may bring overnight bags on Thursday morning and please pay particular attention to what is and is not allowed.  Also, please have them layer clothing as the weather may get chilly.  They also should have a lunch labeled for Friday in addition to lunch on Thursday.

Try to have them wear their class shirt if they have one, a Big Shanty shirt,or a teal colored t-shirt.

The students not attending the field trip should report to Mrs. Hobson's classroom on Friday morning as they will work on activities with Ms. Christianson in that classroom until we return on Friday. Thanks for your understanding.

Upcoming Atlanta Zoo Trip

Tomorrow, the children who have already returned permission to attend the zoo trip on Thursday, March 26th, will be bringing home additional information as to what they will need to bring and what they may not bring on the trip.  In addition, there are two forms that must be completed and returned to school by March 13th.  The children not attending the overnight trip (March 26-March 27th) will have special activities at school that Friday.  We will have a regular school day on Thursday, as we do not leave until later in the day.  However, I would like the children going to have the items packed that they plan to bring at school on Thursday morning, if possible.  Any questions, you may send me a note or call me.  Thanks for your help.

Homework Change

Your child was given a note regarding a change in homework beginning next week. This note was stapled in their agenda and basically states how we plan to conserve paper the next few weeks and last nine weeks of school.  Your child may continue to use the spelling choice board given to them this week for ideas and will be expected to write additional assignments in their agenda.  Instead of a reading log, they wil be expected to use the reading strategies we have been using in our guided groups and think of  questions to write about the text, make connections, write summaries, or share unusual words they learned as they read.  For math and reading you may sign in the agenda to indicate that they read and/or if they  practiced math facts and they will be able to put their name on a sticky for our drawing jars on Friday.  Also, look for your child to bring home a list of words they have copied for spelling and super spellers will still be challenged with additional words. Our test format will also change next week due to issues with the copiers and in an effort to further conserve paper. Mardi Gras Celebration

On Tuesday, the students learned two French words and about the celebration of Mardi Gras.  Mrs. Lawley sent in a  special snack, a King Cake, for the students to enjoy, too.  A big thanks to Adam's mom for making this day special.

Read Across America

Monday, March 2nd, is "Read Across America" and we will be celebrating by honoring Dr. Seuss and reading many of his books that he wrote.  If your child has any favorite Dr. Seuss books they would like to share have them bring them to school that day.  I have several and some of my favorites I plan to read to the students.  Thanks for your support in making this day special.
