Another Year!

Thank you for a wonderful year!  It has been an honor and a privilege to be your teacher this year.  I want to thank my wonderful parent volunteers for making this year very easy for me as a teacher when it comes to support, celebrations and testing.  Mrs. Wogon and Mrs. Bowman I can not thank you enough for all you did this year to make it a success for the students.  I hope you all have a wonderful summer and I know these students will be very successful Middle Schoolers next year.  I hope they will keep in touch with me and let me know how they are doing.  As a final thought I would like to leave you with this simple thought:

Great Expectations
It's time to say, "Good-bye."
Our year has come to an end.
I've made more cherished memories
And many more new friends.
I've watched your children learn and grow
And change from day to day.
I hope that all the things we've done
Have helped in some small way.
So it's with happy memories
I send them out the door,

THE END IS NEAR!!!!

 Testing is over!!  Thank you so much to our wonderful room moms, Mrs. Wogon and Mrs. Bowman for supplying us with mints, water, and snacks for testing.  We are very grateful to them.

Middle School Registration forms are going home in Thursday folders.  Please read and sign and return ASAP.  Make sure immunization records are up to date as well.  The forms are preprinted so there are no extra copies.  They are due by May 8th.  Thank you for your support.

Important dates in May:        May 5th - Palmer Parents Night at 7:00 P.M.

                                            May 11th - Palmer Shadow Day

                                                            Awtrey Parents Night 7:00 P.M.

                                            May 15th - Field Day

                                            May 19th - Fifth Grade Picnic

We will also be having our annual kickball tournament in fifth grade during the last week of school.

Please continue to reinforce to your child that it is very important to stay focused, do their best each day, and continue to follow the rules for good behavior.  I appreciate your support.

TESTING REMINDERS

CRCT REMINDERS:

1. Testing is from April 21-27th.

2. Please get a good night sleep, eat a good breakfast, and get to school on time.

3. CRCT Testing Schedule is as follows - Tuesday- Reading, Wednesday - English/Language   Arts, Thursday- Math, Friday-Science, Monday - Social Studies -- Testing will last   approximately 2 hours each day. Please plan appointments accordingly!!! Students will not  be dismissed early until after testing is completed each day.

Below is a link to a CRCT Study Guide that the Georgia DOE has posted on their website.  It contains many useful practice questions and tips for your student to use to help him/her prepare for the test!  Remember,the CRCT is April 21 - May 1!  Also continue to encourage your student to take practice tests at www.georgiaoas.org!

We are reviewing this week in math and as many other subjects as we can.  We have covered all the material necessary in our math compacting classes so now students need to review nightly on the areas they feel are necessary to review.

The Spring Carnival is this Friday!!!!  PTA is asking each student to donate 1-12 pack of coke, diet coke or sprite.  You can start bringing those in any time. We also need 8 cakes from our class to donate for the Cake Walk.  These can be brought in Friday morning.  Thank you to all of you who donated items for our "coffee" basket.

Thank you for your continued support of your children.  There are 29 days left in the school year.  Time is going by very quickly and there is a lot to do yet before the last day.  Please continue to encourage your child do their very best every day.

Next week Academic Alerts go home for the last time.  Please sign and return.  Also going home in the Thursday folders are reminders to those of you who have not turned in the immunization records for your child to attend Middle School.  They will withdraw them from school if they do not have those records in their cum folders.  Please take care of this as soon as possible.  Thank you.

BUSY, BUSY, BUSY!!!!

Spring is March 20th.  Report cards go home on Thursday.  Please sign the card in the envelope and return it in the envelope to me.  Thank you for your support.

Our fifth grade field trip to Huntsville is Friday the 27th of March.  Please make sure you have turned in a transportation form so we know how your child is getting to school by 6:00a.m. and who will be picking them up at 9:45p.m.  Please be on time, especially picking them up.

 Author's Night is March 31st.  Our class is doing a play from our basal reader called, Dream Maker, the story of Mary McLeod Bethune.  They are very excited to show off their talents to their parents.

Fourth Quarter is well underway toward the final weeks of fifth grade.  Students need to continue to focus, write down their assignments daily, complete class work and homework, and study nightly.  They should be practicing the CRCT tests on line daily as well.  Please check with your child and make sure they have all of their school supplies to be prepared for class on a daily basis.

We have set our Fourth Quarter goals so we can be motivated to finish our elementary years successfully.

Hi,
PE is looking for some items for Field Day.  Large size Big Wheels.  They will probably never be usuable again, so, we will not be giving them back.  We will come and pick them up if they wish.

TURN CLOCKS AHEAD

SPRING AHEAD!  Don't forget this week end to turn your clocks ahead one hour for Daylight Savings Time.

Our Spring Carnival is also right around the corner.  Our class is doing a basket with the theme, "coffee".  Each class is asked to donate eight cakes to be dropped off the morning of the carnival (Fri. April 17th).  Also each student is asked to donate one 12-pack of soda preferably coke, diet coke, or sprite.  These can be dropped off in the PTA room anytime the week of the carnival.  Thank you so much for your support of Big Shanty and help to make our carnival successful.

SPRING WILL ARRIVE SOON

March is fast approaching and the end of the Third Quarter.  Just a reminder that there is an Early Release day on March 3rd.  The fifth grade Writing Assessment Test is Wednesday the 4th of March.  We have been practicing and working very hard to prepare for the test.  Science compacting will end next Thursday for this session.  My students will be going to Mrs. Ashmeade next.

Teachers have spent a good amount of time preparing some new CRCT tests on line.  Please make sure your child is practicing daily. The CRCT testing will be here before we know it! 

Also please check with your child on the status of their school supplies.  We have been doing projects in class and will continue to do them from time to time and many students do not have scissors, glue, and crayons.  This is part of their responsibility as a fifth grader to come to school prepared with the materials they need.  Thank you for helping me with this.

March 31st is our annual Author's Night after the PTA meeting.  There will be three fifteen minute sessions.  My class is doing a play taken from our basil reader called "Dream Maker" the story of Mary McLeod-Bethune.  It should be a great evening and a chance to see our students in action demonstrating their talents.  Please join us!!

    Congratulations to our Spelling Bee Winner Leah Jean-Francois.  Way to go!!!  Also Lauren D'Olympio represented us proudly in the Geography Bee.  What a talented class we have.

Third Quarter is in full swing with many events coming up in the next few months.  The end of January, 26th-30th is our Parent Conference Week and Book Fair.   Students will be dismissed early each day. Thank you all for getting your forms in so I could accommodate everyones schedule for conferences.  Please make sure you have written down the day and time and please be on time, otherwise the next parent conference will be late.  Thank you for your support.

We are doing a lot of writing to prepare for the Writing Assessment Test in March.  Some students are two weeks behind in their journal.  Please check with your child and make sure they are writing nightly and on week ends if neccessary to keep up.  I appreciate your help in this matter.

Your child now has access to a great resource for preparing for the state standardized reading test. We have purchased a web-based program called Study Island. If you have internet access, your child can access Study Island from home as well as school to prepare for the state assessment.

The program is designed to help your child in areas of need and students are able to learn at their own pace. There is no software to download or install; all you need is an Internet connection. By using this program, students build confidence in their understanding of the Georgia Performance Standards.

WE HAVE A WINNER!

  Congratulations to our Spelling Bee winners: Leah Jean-Francois first place and Zachary Sloope runner-up.  Our Spelling Bee will be on Friday January 16th at 8:10 in the cafeteria.  We also want to congratulate our Geography Bee winners: Lauren D'Olympio first place and Grant Westbrook second place.  Our Geography Bee will be held on Tuesday January 13th at 8:10 in the cafeteria.  Our class wishes both of our winners the best and know that they will make our class proud!

Thank you for your support and have a wonderful, joyful, restful and relaxing holiday with family and friends.

Please check your child's school supplies and make sure they have pencils,erasers, paper, notebooks, scissors, glue, and crayons or colored papers when they return on January 6, 2009.  These make great stocking stuffers for the holidays. Third Quarter begins and a very busy time of year for fifth grade as we enter the last half of the school year.

January 19th NO SCHOOL

January 26-30th is Conference Week, Early Dismissal and Book Fair

Please mark your calendars for that week.  We will be sending home notices and a schedule in January.  Report cards will be distributed at that time.  For families with siblings we try to arrange the conferences on the same day to accommodate your needs with time in between for travel.
