BIG SHANTY AUTHORS' NIGHT & BOOK FAIR

Aloha,

This week (April 30-May 4) is Big Shanty Book Fair Week, you can shop in school or online.  But that's not all...

This Thursday evening (May 4th) is Big Shanty’s fifth annual, Author’s Night from 6:30-8PM.
It’s going to be an exciting writing celebration with events like:

• Peace, Love, and Poetry Cafe by Mrs. Cerra and Mrs. Peacock’s classes
• Shark Songs by Mrs. Burke’s class
• Cinderella audio eBooks by Mrs. Hill’s class
• National Park Travel Brochure videos by Mrs. Hellman and Mrs. Green’s classes

 and so much more. 

Also, Mrs. Melissa Adams, Cobb Children's Librarian, will entertain and explain the Kennesaw Public Libraries summer reading program!

Its’ going to be LOADS of FUN!

April - National Library Month

April is national school library month.  We will be celebrating reading all month with books, ebooks, and audiobooks that highlight the love of reading.  Our book of the week is:  "My Librarian is a Camel" by Margriet Ruurs.  This nonfiction book describes how books are brought to children all over the world. Many places don't have libraries with walls; instead they deliver books to people in creative ways.  "Why would librarians go to the trouble of packign books on the backs of elephants or driving miles to deliver books by bus? Becuas, as one librarian in Azerbaijan says, "the mobile library is as important as air or water."

Celebrate, by visiting your public or school library and check out all the wonderful print and electronic resources they have to offer.  Also, if you can, volunteer a few minutes of your time!  Libraries provide access to information for all people, children and adults alike!

Thursday, May 4 Big Shanty's Authors' Night - Grab your ukulele and your lei and hula your way over to Big Shanty for the 5th Annual Authors' Night!  You won't want to miss the many exciting student presentations at this Writing Luau, so mark your calendar for Thursday, May 3 6:30-8 PM.  It is sure to be a night filled with fun.  See you there! March Madness

What a busy month...

March 2 - Read Across America - Dr. Seuss' Birthday

The day was celebrating with Awtrey Middle School Students reading to our students, parents pledging to read for 30 minutes with their child, students sharing their favorite authors/books via the post-it wall, and a Best Book Character Costume Contest!  The best costume winners for group are..."The Three Little Pigs"

March 9:  Carmen Agra Deedy, Author & Storytellerand Visit

What a storyteller, Ms. Deedy told stories to each grade level.  She had students and staff spellbound and in stitches, laughing till their sides ached!

March 23:  Kevin O'Malley, Author & Illustrator Visit

Mr. O'Malley regaled third graders with his art and stories.  Thank you, Dr. Debra Coffey, Kennesaw State University, Children's Literature Department for providing this interesting children's author and illustrator.

This month's library lessons are about atlases, both print and online versions.  We are also beginning an author study about Carmen Agra Deedy.  We will be reading her books and learning about her life. She is a local Georgia author who will be visiting our school on March 9, 2012.  She is an amazing storyteller who has beguiled adults and children alike over the last 20 years with her fabulous stories.  To learn more about her books use NoveList K-8. Learn more about Carmen from Gale KidsInfo Bits.  Both of these databases are  in the Cobb Virtual Library Elementary, NoveList from the left hand column and Kids InfoBits from the Magazines, Reference, and More section.

will be competing against readers from other elementary schools on Saturday, January 21 at the Cobb County Helen Ruffin Bowl at McEachern High School. Readers are Leaders!  Go Big Shanty readers!

Happy Thanksgiving!

We sold over $9800 worth of books from the book fair.  Thank you Big Shanty students, teachers, and families.  A tremendous thank you to Big Shanty Book Fair Committee and all the volunteers who made this possible. Twenty five percent of the procceeds funds things for the library such as hosting an author visit, by the amazing Carmen Agra Deedy (March 9, 2012), purchasing Accelerated Reader tests, and so much more.

Welcome Back!

It is exciting to be back at Big Shanty Intermediate School Media Center.  There are many new things.  First, Mrs. Lauryl Sanchez is the new media parapro here. She comes to us from Chalker Elementary and is currently a library media student at UGA.  Second, we have eBooks - 37 of them to be precise.  These are books that can be checked out and read online!  Third, we have new wireless laptop carts...so we (and all the teachers) will be able to check them out.  This will allow us to more easily incorporate technology into our instruction!

There are many wonderful online resources that students and their families offered through the Cobb Media Department.  There is Destiny, our online catalog.  In addition, World Book Online, Grolier Onine, CultureGrams, NetTrekker, and much much more...   and all are accessible from the Cobb Virtual Library  http://cvl.cobbk12.org/.  For login name and password contact your media center!

Calling all moms and dads with a few minutes to share...the media center is in need of a few good volunteers, folks willing to help make copies, checkout and shelf books, process books for circulation, and much much more...we are able to do so many more wonderful things for your students when we have help.  Contact Lauryl for more details laurylyn.sanchez@cobbk12.org.
